When I first got into freelance writing, it was writing articles. The first project I worked on was non-paid, I had been a regular on the discussion forums for Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine for awhile and was approached about writing a FAQ for the forums by the magazine's senior editor. I recruited some other forum regulars to help out, and we did a pretty nice job on the FAQ. After that MCPmag gave me the opportunity to do some paid work, which started out as writing a couple of product reviews for the magazine. Later I participated in writing a monthly column for the magazine. After Penton Media bought out then MCSE Live! (now CertTutor.net), where I am a "tutor" (the title for moderators), I had the opportunity to do some writing for them, and wrote an editorial column every six weeks or so for a year that went out to thousands of email subscribers. Penton decided after about a year to cut back on their email newsletters, and the one I worked on was one of the ones that got the axe. In early 2001, Transcender (the makers of the most popular line of test prep software) contracted me to help launch the Tech Center on their website. My role consisted of contributing technical articles, and over the course of the 15 months the project lasted (Transcender pulled the plug due to economic struggles with the company) I wrote almost 50 paid tech articles for the site. In September 2002 I was contracted to write 100 Exchange 2000 practice exam questions for CramSession (Brainbuzz), one of the most popular IT certification sites on the Internet. Here are about 50 of my articles from Transcender, Penton, and an interview I did for a magazine a couple of years ago (I don't remember which unfortunately): Book: Beginner's Guide to a Successful IT Career Penton Newsletter Commentaries Transcender Technical Articles |
